Mark and Susan Watson have a love for the arts, and they have been involved with theatre for all of their lives. They are enjoying the opportunity to share the stage together in HCT's current production of Number The Stars.
Mark stated, "As a history fan, I have really enjoyed being involved with the presentation of this story. Bringing history to life through live theatre is personally meaningful to me, and I think there is great value in doing this production for our community."
Mark has appeared in many HCT productions over the years while also writing and directing several musicals at Bethlehem Baptist church in Clarkesville; recent appearances on the Kollock Stage include Matthew Cuthbert in Anne of Green Gables and Cord Elam in Oklahoma! But the genesis of his theatre interest can be traced back to the day when a young theatre student, Susan Boyd (now Watson), caught his eye and eventually captured his heart. Having worked together over the years on many productions, sharing the stage together in Number the Stars is a true delight for them.
Susan graduated with a BA in Theatre from Agnes Scott College and is currently serving on the HCT Board of Directors as the VP of Operations. This past summer, she co-directed the highly-acclaimed musical, Oklahoma!, and is scheduled to co-direct You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown later this year. She has given countless hours to our theater over the last several years and is passionate about seeing HCT continue to evolve and deliver outstanding theatre to our community.
Number the Stars is set during the German occupation of Denmark in World War II, during which Danish freedom fighters of all ages risked everything in daring, hurried attempts to rescue the entire Jewish population. Young sisters Annemarie and Kirstie Johansen face soldiers, interrogations, fierce dogs, personal danger, the loss of loved ones, and their own fears as they try to help their friend, Ellen Rosen, escape to Sweden and safety. Courage, faith, ingenuity, and even their fledgling acting skills are essential to their success.
